Introduction to minibeasts

What a lovely week of weather we have had to start the summer term.  The children have taken on our new topic of minibeasts with great enthusiasm and have become very good at spotting minibeasts both inside and outside the classroom. Some children have made homes for the minibeast they have found.

In maths our focus this week has been thinking of a number and working out what one more would be. We have done lots of jumping along the number line and adding one teddy to the basket. We have also looked around the classroom to see what shapes we can see.

We drew a picture of ourselves and some children had a go at using their phonics to write a sentence I am…. The children did really well with this activity.
We also listened to a story about a baby owl and thought of how the story might end.

Next week PE will be on THURSDAY as we have Active Luton coming in to do a workshop with the class. Please can all children wear trainers or shoes they can run in easily to nursery on that day. We will be joining the rest of the school in St Dominic Maths Week by taking part in a maths trail around the key stage 1 and foundation stage playground. We will be finding out about frogs and tadpoles and visiting the school pond.

There has been a letter with various nursery notices sent out by parent mail this week. If anyone would like a hard copy please come and see me. The sign up sheet for stay and play week is with the end of day signing out sheet by the side nursery door.

Here are a few of the other things we have enjoyed doing this week including printing a caterpillar using marshmallows , which was very popular.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Easter

We have had an exciting week to finish our Spring term.
On Monday we listened to the events of the Easter Story. We made a little Easter garden to take home to help remind us of what happened. The children listened very attentively to the Bible story and could recall lots of what they had heard. We also watched a clip on You Tube from the Beginner's Bible.

Later that morning nursery had their Easter egg hunt organised by the parent reps. They had to find lots of different cardboard eggs with numbers on hidden in the outdoor area. The children are very good at recognizing their numbers. They then exchanged their cardboard eggs for the real thing!

On Tuesday we made chocolate krispie nests helped by two mummies. We put the nest in our decorated Easter baskets and then found a little chocolate surprise in them when we took them home.

On Tuesday we also looked at the differences between a cooked and uncooked egg and some pictures of Mrs Clarke's chickens. We watched a clip of a chicken hatching from an egg. We ate hot cross buns for our snack and took part in different art activities. We could do a colour by numbers egg or decorate an egg with cotton wool buds.

On Wednesday we were joined by year 3. Each year 3 child had prepared a snack for a nursery child to enjoy and the snack was themed around a story they first read to their nursery partner. The snacks were most creative and thoroughly enjoyed by nursery.

On Thursday we joined the rest of the school for Mass.

Our theme next term will be Minibeasts and there will be more details about this topic at the beginning of next term. There is no specific speaking and listening object for the first week of next term. We look forward to hearing about what the children have done in the holidays and they are welcome to bring in anything eg photos, postcards etc that relate to something they have done over the next two weeks.

I hope you all have a lovely Easter holidays.
